How to develop your creative mind?


Four million French people are passionate about writing or have manuscripts lying dormant in their drawers. Writing is above all a pleasure, it is not a job. There isn’t just one way to perfect your writing.

Writing, for Elizabeth, is the great love in her life. Thanks to the international success of “Eat, Pray and Love”, she transformed her relationship to her writing work. Unlike his previous books, this one was a resounding success, which changed his life forever.

From adolescence, Elizabeth wanted to become a writer. But, the people around her were afraid of this choice, lest she die on her shattered dreams and fail to write books, sending her back to failure, without having started. Anything.

Following the success of her book, she asked herself a number of questions. She had some fears that she would never be able to do better than this book, which people made her feel. She wondered, rightly, if she was ever going to be able to write a book that would interest people again.

The only real questions that torment any aspiring to writing are: why does creation scare others? Why does creation scare us? More than in other trades… Elizabeth’s father was a chemical engineer. In 40 years of work, no one has ever asked him if he was afraid to do this job!

In Western society, writers have a reputation for suffering from significant mental instability. Moreover, it is true that some creators died young, destroyed by their talent.

It is fashionable to believe that creativity and suffering go hand in hand and that the two are linked, a concept well known and deeply rooted in the minds of people. For many of us, we believe that art leads to some form of anxiety. Elizabeth Gilbert does not like this statement at all, which she finds odious and dangerous. For her, it is more than important to encourage creators to live.

After her global success, she wondered, rightly, how she was going to continue doing the job she loved. In order to continue writing, she had to create some sort of protective mental construct, aimed at forgetting everything that had happened before.

Elizabeth took the time to research examples of societies where creators were more supported. Logically enough, she turned to Greek and Roman Antiquity. These people believed that creativity did not come from human beings. Rather, they believed that it was a benevolent divine spirit coming to people from a distant and impenetrable source. The Greeks called these creative minds “demons”.

Socrates believed he had a demon who inspired him with wisdom from afar. The Romans called him a “genius”. They didn’t think a genius was a particularly gifted person. It was in their eyes a sort of divine and magical entity supposed to live within the walls of an artist’s studio.

Everything changed during the Renaissance. The human being has been placed at the center of the universe. It was the beginning of rational humanism. Creativity then depended solely on the individual. For the first time in history it has been said that the individual is a genius instead of saying that he has a genius. This is a big mistake for Elizabeth. The weight is far too heavy for a single human to carry. It distorts and perverts his ego. This creates too many unmanageable expectations on performance.

The process of creation is a mystery, which does not always make sense. It can even seem paranormal at times. Ruth Stone, an American poet, smelled and heard the coming poem as she worked in the fields. It was like a thunderous wind rushing at her across a landscape.

Elizabeth Gilbert gets up at the same time every day, sweats, oars and pedals in the semolina with difficulty, according to her terms. She often says that she had ideas coming from a source that she could not identify. She also reveals that she suffered from a fit of despair right in the middle of “Eat, Pray or Love”. She was sure it was going to be a disaster, the worst book she ever wrote.

So, to curb her inner demons, she spoke loudly in a corner of her room saying that she knew it wasn’t great, but that she was putting her whole heart into it. So she told the wall that if he wanted it to be better, he had to point the tip of his nose.

For Elizabeth, the creator is illuminated from within and has an unimaginable source for creativity. She advises not to be afraid and to do your job.

Anne LaMotte is an American writer. At 61, she wrote down a list of everything she was sure of. To create, everyone needs their inner self, their true person: this is outside of time and space. It has no age. Facing her truths has been liberating for her. Anne says loud and clear that life is good and that it is a precious gift. She is full of heartbreaking sweetness and beauty. But, it turns out to be hard for sentient beings.

It is imperative to identify why you are stuck, why you do not know how to solve a question that you have just asked in your story, how to bring a twist around a character. If this turns out to be complicated, Maxima recommends going back to one of your favorite books. Then identify why you loved this book, which is somewhat in the spirit of what you are writing. You are not copying this book, but you are taking inspiration from its spirit, its tone.

Plunge back into the soft underbelly of a book, especially around the middle, where there are longer moments, because the author wants to have fun with things. Or because at one point there were so many doors open that we need to develop them a bit. You have to see how the author did in this book. This will give your ideas for ways to answer some of your questions.

Use post-it notes to jot down new ideas or omissions. It works theoretically with everyone. Write down all the ideas you had for your book that you haven’t included: characters, places, twists and turns. Use as much as possible. See later if you don’t have any new ideas that emerge.

Once everything is written down on a large piece of paper or on a table, try to see what can go with each other, what is at odds, what can be traced back to what you have already written. Perhaps this will make you wonder about what has already been written in your text and put your hands in it again. Always keep in mind that a painter does not finish a painting with clean hands.

Writing is the same as painting: you must have your head full of it, it must overflow, drip. You must have digital ink in your brain. Do not hesitate to grind the words, the sentences, to ask yourself questions. When you are stuck there is no quick answer. But, the means exist to find a release, to circumvent the problems or to revive a little its creativity.

My advice

It is necessary to write with the HEART. Write without the filter of reason, which is always present to titillate you, to question you, to discredit you or to make you renounce. The reason is a poisonous poison which must be avoided. Write without asking yourself too many questions. Write as you see fit. Write as you feel it deep inside you.

Do not listen to the discordant voices around or within you that will inevitably put stumbling blocks in your writing path to keep you from moving forward. Write spontaneously, letting go! Go and seek inspiration deep within you. Forget, for a moment, the style, the spelling, the syntax, the reader. WRITE FOR YOURSELF! HAVE A PLEASURE!

Write without looking back. Write without censoring yourself. Use your creativity, it is a precious gift. A tiny starting idea can turn into a great story idea. Believe in yourself and your writing skills.

Writing makes you happy. Writing will enrich your life. 

Write all the time. Read a lot. Watch films, recent or old, series or documentaries. They can be a source of ideas. Avoid all the stupid shows offered on television these days. Listen to music as often as you can – it can free up knots and spaces in your mind and body. Visit museums, listen to others, and relax.

Yoga, meditation, and other relaxation techniques can help clear your mind. It happened very often that I had an idea for a story when I found myself on my yoga mat. It is up to everyone to find their technique, but it is important to have breaks that free and ventilate the mind and body.

As a conclusion

Creativity is not an innate gift. It can be learned and cultivated. Do you believe for a single moment that Pablo Picasso or Victor Hugo have become geniuses like that with a stroke of a pencil or a pen or a magic wand? They persevered, failed a lot, toiled, and sweated before offering one of their works to the eyes of the world.

We all have within us this creativity, this creative spirit, which we all displayed as children. Where did this spirit go? Life causes us to put aside this spark of life within us. It is there lurking deep inside us. So let’s go back to the discovery of this spark, create around us a magic bubble that will transcend our pen.

It’s possible, you just have to believe in it and get started. At some point, you have to start, dive into the pool without seeing the bottom. Procrastination is futile and exhausting, and to always say and do nothing, is it moving forward in life?
